In August, the main structure of the phosphoric acid reactor, a key process unit of the 300 KTPA MAP Project in Zambia undertaken by the Sixth Branch of China National Chemical Engineering Sixth Construction Co., Ltd. (CC6), was successfully topped out. In recognition of its outstanding performance, the project team was awarded the title of “Safety Excellence Role Model” by the general contractor.
Located in Lusaka, the capital of Zambia, the project is a key initiative aimed at upgrading the country’s fertilizer industry. Upon reaching full production capacity, the project is expected to produce 300,000 tonnes of monoammonium phosphate (MAP) annually. CC6’s scope of work covers the construction and installation of the main process units, including the sulfuric acid plant, phosphoric acid plant, and MAP plant.
The phosphoric acid reactor is a core structure in the fertilizer production line. Construction of its main structure was completed over a period of 98 days. Faced with challenges including tight overseas material supplies, limited local construction support facilities, and high temperatures during the rainy season, the project team carefully coordinated the construction schedule, dynamically optimized construction plans, and effectively resolved key technical challenges. The structure successfully passed quality inspection on the first submission, meeting high standards of quality and workmanship and marking the successful completion of this important project milestone.
Since construction began, the project team has strictly implemented all requirements for safe and orderly construction. It has conducted regular safety inspections and corrective actions targeting high-risk activities and conditions, including work at height, simultaneous operations, and construction during the rainy season. The team has also organized regular safety and technical briefings, safety awareness training, and emergency drills for all personnel to strengthen frontline workers’ safe operating skills and emergency response capabilities. When presenting the “Safety Excellence Role Model” certificate, the general contractor’s project management team commended CC6, stating: “In July this year, CC6 implemented its safety management measures effectively, with thorough planning, comprehensive controls, and standardized execution throughout the process, demonstrating solid safety management capabilities and strong emergency response performance.”
To date, the project has generated more than 260 local employment opportunities and organized over 20 specialized training sessions in areas such as construction and technical operations. While advancing construction efficiently, the project team has also helped develop local technical talent in Zambia and contributed to employment and income growth in surrounding communities.
Moving forward, the project team will continue to build on its achievements, using the Group’s star-rated standardized construction site initiative as a key framework and adhering to the company’s standards for quality project delivery. It will advance the MAP Project safely and efficiently, deliver a high-quality project, uphold the reputation of “Chinese Construction,” and further strengthen the friendship between China and Zambia.
